Winter Tour – Semmering Loop Hike via Pinkenkogel

Winter Tour – Semmering Loop Hike via Pinkenkogel

The circular hike around Semmering via Pinkenkogel is a varied tour that reveals a particularly quiet and scenic side during winter. Despite its relatively short distance, the route offers a well-balanced mix of steep ascents, narrow forest trails, and beautiful viewpoints overlooking the Semmering area.

Start at Semmering Railway Station

The hike begins directly at Semmering railway station, making it easily accessible by public transport. After leaving the station, the route initially leads through the village — not gently, but immediately uphill along steep roads. This section continues up to the forest edge and quickly raises your heart rate.

Especially in winter, this first part should not be underestimated. Snow or ice can already make the ascent slippery and more demanding.

Entering the Forest and Ascent to Pinkenkogel

Once you reach the forest, the more pleasant part of the hike begins. The route becomes quieter, the surroundings more natural, and the village gradually fades away behind you.

From this point, it is less than 2 kilometers to Pinkenkogel. The ascent is moderate but constant and leads through dense forest. Particularly in winter, the atmosphere here becomes exceptionally calm and almost secluded.

Shortly before the summit, there are a few benches that are ideal for a first break — especially if you carry winter equipment such as a seat pad.

At Pinkenkogel – Short Section with Limited Infrastructure

Pinkenkogel itself is rather modest, although it offers occasional views. One important thing to know: after Pinkenkogel there are no further resting places.

Anyone planning the circular route should already pay attention to the continuation of the trail, as the crucial junction can easily be overlooked.

Important Junction – Easy to Miss

One critical point of the tour lies shortly after Pinkenkogel. After a few hundred meters, an inconspicuous trail branches off to the left.

  • In winter, this junction is often difficult to recognize
  • During our hike, the trail was completely covered by snow
  • We initially missed the turn ourselves

Careful navigation is highly recommended here (for example with a GPX track), otherwise it is easy to continue too far along the wrong path.

Steep and Demanding Descent

Once the correct junction is found, the technically most demanding section of the tour begins: the steep descent.

  • Parts of the trail can be heavily iced
  • Narrow passages
  • Increased risk of slipping

Particular caution is required in winter conditions. Proper hiking boots with good traction are essential, and microspikes can be very useful in icy conditions.

Return via the Wasserleitungsweg

The return route follows the so-called “Wasserleitungsweg” (“Water Pipeline Trail”), although the word “trail” can be somewhat misleading. In practice, it is more of a narrow path, at times partially exposed, running parallel to the Liechtensteinstraße forest road.

Characteristics of this section:

  • Narrow trail, sometimes barely visible
  • Partially exposed terrain
  • Mostly through forest
  • Quiet and rarely used route

Especially in winter with deep snow — in our case sometimes knee-deep — this section becomes considerably more exhausting.

Return to the Railway Station

After the final section, the route gradually returns toward Semmering and eventually ends back at the railway station, completing the circular hike perfectly.

Winter Conditions – Important Notes

The tour was completed in February under winter conditions:

  • Snow partly knee-deep
  • Several icy sections, especially during the descent
  • Hiking boots were completely soaked by the end of the tour

For the Semmering circular hike via Pinkenkogel in winter, the following equipment is recommended:

  • Warm clothing (e.g. a down jacket)
  • Waterproof hiking boots (preferably high-cut)
  • Microspikes for icy conditions
  • Seat pad for breaks
  • Gaiters for deep snow

Tour Data and Difficulty Assessment

  • Distance: approx. 8 km
  • Duration: 2.5–3.5 hours (depending on conditions)
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate (significantly more demanding in winter)
  • Terrain: forest roads, narrow trails, steep sections

Conclusion

The Semmering circular hike via Pinkenkogel is a compact but varied tour with a special appeal in winter. The combination of a steep start, a quiet forest ascent, and a technically demanding descent makes it an interesting option for hikers looking for a short but non-trivial circular route.
