The hike to Seckauer Zinken (2,397 m) is one of the more impressive tours in Styria. With varied terrain, quiet forest sections, and a wide alpine landscape, the route offers a balanced combination of nature experience and physical challenge.
Starting Point and Approach
The hike begins at the Gasthof Steinmühle near Seckau. The initial section follows a pleasant trail through dense forest, at times running alongside a small stream.
In principle, it is possible to refill water here. However, access can be difficult in places, as the stream runs through steeper terrain, making it not always easy to reach.
Ascent to Seckauer Zinken
After the forest section, the actual ascent begins. The trail gradually becomes steeper and leads out of the wooded area into open alpine terrain. The landscape opens up, offering wide views.
Overall, the ascent is rated easy to moderate. A good level of fitness is required, but technically the route remains manageable. In the upper section, the trail becomes steeper, though it does not involve any difficult climbing passages.
Important note on water supply:
Approximately 800 meters before the summit, there is another stream. However, reaching it requires leaving the main route. Additionally, it is not a reliable water source—depending on weather conditions and precipitation, it may be dry.
Summit: Seckauer Zinken (2,397 m)
At the summit, you are rewarded with expansive views over the surrounding mountain ranges. On clear days, there is an impressive panorama across the Niedere Tauern.
Compared to other peaks, Seckauer Zinken is relatively quiet and not overcrowded, which adds to the appeal of the tour.
Descent via Moosboden
The descent follows the route towards Moosboden, leading back down to the starting point.
Although technically not very difficult, the overall length of the tour should not be underestimated. The physical strain remains noticeable until the end.
